The 'all-in-one' style clippers are becoming increasingly popular, in part due to their increasing power thanks to advances in batteries. They offer cost savings in a number of ways: - you can use 1 machine to clip and trim - the blades are usually cheaper (although only some of the blades can be sharpened) - the machine is less expensive than a traditional full size cordless clipper - there is often less need for yearly servicing (with fewer moving parts and often sealed units) - you don't need to pay somebody to clip - these machines have pre-tensioned blades and are easier to manage than traditional full size machines
The Heiniger Saphir (and its many iterations) has been around for years - with the Heiniger Saphir Horse especially aimed at the equestrian market. Heiniger also introduced the more powerful Heiniger Opal a few years ago. The cheaper 'all-in-one' option is the Liveryman Harmony Plus, which has seen sales rocket over the last few years. And now Wahl has brought out a newer more advanced version of its KM Cordless clipper, aimed specifically at the equestrian crowd.
So, beyond cost savings, why else are these 'all-in-one' clippers popular?
The disadvantage of this type of clipper is that is is not really suitable for doing full clips on multiple horses, or for clipping a horse with a very challenging coat. But for those with 1 horse with a 'normal' type coat it is a brilliant option to consider. The new Wahl KMC+ has an impressive 3 year warranty (the Harmony Plus only has a 1 year warranty and the Heiniger options have a 2 year warranty). It's at a competitive price point (more than the Harmony Plus, less than the Heinigers) and it has much more power than the Harmony Plus and comparable power to the Heiniger Opal. It also has 2 speeds (the only other all-in-one clipper to have 2 speeds is the Heiniger Opal). It comes with a wide blade (which are slightly more expensive than the narrow blades) that clips to 1.8mm. It is quieter than the Harmony Plus, and similar to the Heiniger clippers in terms of volume (although, all these clippers are very quiet when compared to the full size clippers). It can also clip for 2 hours on a fully charged battery - you can't ask much more than that! I think think this is a really great option for anyone looking to clip one horse. The price point coupled with the 3 years warranty makes it a very compelling offer, and the power is excellent for this style of clipper. If you are used to full size clippers you have to realise that this will be a different experience - but there are significant benefits to off-set the reduction in power from full size clippers. I would seriously consider this clipper if I was new to clipping and if I had one or maybe 2 horses. I'd look at full size options if I was clipping multiple horses, or horses with a really challenging coat. PLUS BUY IT NOW AND GET A NARROW AND A WIDE BLADE!
