Heinger Opal, Heiniger Saphir, Liveryman Harmony Plus and Wahl KMC+ A5 Snap On Clipper review and comparison

25 October 2024  |  Beth

The A5 style clippers for dogs and horses have become increasingly popular.  This is because they are light and easy to use, with reasonably low volumes and vibrations.  The price point is also better than the larger clippers traditional used.  Below is a brief, comparative overview of 4 of the most popular and respected clippers in the category.  They are all almost identical in size (not weight).  They all take the same type of blades.  However, they differ in warranty duration, clipping/charging time, replaceable internal batteries, mains lead option, weight and volume.  So have a look below to learn about what separates these clippers and if you have any questions please email us at sales@farmcareuk.com.  We are a family run business and always happy to help.  We also try to offer the very best prices, so if you see it in stock for less anywhere else, let us know an we will try to meet or beat the price.

Heiniger Opal: The quietest, lightest option (415g) with 2-speeds (2600 rpm or 4500 rpm) and a powerful brushless motor.  It runs for an impressive 4 hours on a full charge and takes an hour to recharge.  It comes with 2 batteries and, usually, a narrow blade that clips to 1.8mm.  It has a 2 year warranty.  The batteries are replaceable. This is the most expensive clipper, but also probably the best in terms of performance.

Currently on offer for £326 with a free second blade (subject to change)  Click here to order or for more details!

Heiniger Saphir:  This is quiet, with just one speed.  It weighs 440g.  It has only one speed and clips for 50 mins, recharging in approx. 40 mins.  It has a 2 year warranty and comes in quite a few different colour ways and different blade options (the insides are all the same so don’t be fooled by the ‘Heiniger Horse’ or ‘Saphir Style’ names – just look at the blades they come with and the colour of the casing).  The batteries are replaceable.  It has a 35 Watt permanent magnet motor, so has good power.  This clipper is hugely popular with vets and pros.  It has been around for years and was the basis for Heiniger developing the slightly more advanced Heiniger Opal clipper.

Currently on sale £285.99.  Click here to order or for details.

Wahl KMC+ Cordless Clipper:  This is a new clipper for 2024.  It weighs 506g.  It has 2 speeds (3700 rpm and 4500 rpm – the fastest in the category) and is quite quiet.  It clips for 2 hours and takes an hour to recharge.  It has a brushless motor.  It also comes with a lead so it can clip directly from the mains. The battery is integral to the clipper and cannot be removed.  It has a It comes with an impressive 3 year warranty.

Currently on sale £230.00  Click here to order.

Liveryman Harmony Plus:  This clipper is hugely popular.  It is very quiet (its pitch makes it seem only slightly louder than the Heiniger Opal) but weighs 568g, so the heaviest of the category (but still very light compared to a full size clipper and also very well balanced).   Like the Wahl KMC+ clipper it comes with a mains lead so it can clip from the mains.  It also has an integral internal battery that cannot be removed and clips for 2 hours on a 3 hour charge.  If you need more clipping time you can purchase an external battery, but these are quite expensive.  It has a brushless motor and a 1 year warranty.

Currently on sale £233.99 and with a free second blade.  If this offer has run out, please email sales@farmcareuk.com and ask!  Click here to order.

So, which would I go for?  It, of course, depends on budget.  The Heiniger Opal is my favourite to use – it is light, quiet, reliable and well balanced, but also the most expensive.  The Saphir is the best-selling and is hugely popular and reliable.  The Wahl KMC+ is probably the best value, with loads of power (but the internal battery cannot be replaced).  The Liveryman is probably the best feel to use in terms of balance and volume, after the Opal, at a lower price point but with only a 1 year warranty.
