Liveryman Harmony Plus - honest review about an increasingly popular Horse clipper and trimmer - 2024

Liveryman Harmony Plus - review - 2024

The Liveryman Harmony Plus has been around for a number of years, and each year it gets more and more popular.  Originally it was seen as just a trimmer, but more people are realising if you switch the blade to a wide blade you can give horses with an 'easy' coat a full clip.  This makes it a 2-in-1 machine, allowing you to clip and trim your horse.  This saves you money by only having one machine.  This 'mid size' machine is also quieter, lighter and has less vibrations than a full size machine, so it is great for nervous animals and those with weaker hands.  Plus, the blades are pre-tensioned, so it is a good option for those new to clipping.  What's more, you can run the clipper from the rechargeable battery for up to 90 minutes, or from the included mains lead (this is not the case with the other 'all-in-one machines, which are only battery run).

So, what's not to like?  Well, the power, for some people, can be a problem.  The machine can handle easy coats, for one horse, but if you are clipping coarse hair or clipping loads of horses, you'll want a full size clipper.  The blades are cheaper than full size blades, but you often can't re-sharpen them (the tension is factory pre-set) so be prepared to replace them.  Fortunately, the Harmony Plus takes the A5 snap on blades, which are widely available and, one of the advantages is that you have an enormous choice of clipping length (including skip tooth blades - which have less teeth, so are a good option for feathers etc and the popular 4.8mm length which is similar to the Covercoat blade).  You can also use this machine to clip dogs, which is potentially another money saver.

The Harmony Plus is very quiet.  It is much quieter than a full size clipper and has comparable decibels to the popular Heiniger Saphir, but a slightly lower tone, which makes it seem quieter.  It is nice and light, although slightly heavier than the Heiniger Saphir.  Some say it is better balanced than the Saphir and Liveryman say they deliberately have more weight at the front of the clipper so it angles down when you clip and naturally puts the clipper in the best clipping position.  Personally, I find it comfortable to use and a good weight.

If you like the idea of an 'all-in-one' machine, but want a bit more power then you might want to consider the slightly more expensive Heiniger Opal or Heiniger Saphir or the Wahl KM Cordless.  These machines are very similar to the Harmony Plus and use the same type of blade.  However,  their power is more on par with a full size Lister Star machine and they can handle thicker hair (although still not ideal for very coarse hair).

These 'all-in-on' machines do require you to go fractionally slower when  doing a full clip - with long, steady strokes.  However, they machine is so much lighter and so much quieter that it does feel more relaxing to clip.  You need to oil regularly (every 5-10 minutes), just like with a full size clipper.

Our verdict is that this clipper is absolutely brilliant for anyone with 1 horse, with an easy coat.  It is brilliant because of it's price (and no need for a separate trimmer) and because of Liveryman's strong warranty process (they will collect it if something is wrong and get it back to you within about a week - this is the best in the business).  It is also great because the low vibrations and the quiet low tone of the motor and blades - which makes it easier for nervous animals and nervous humans!  It is not a good option for anybody with more than 1 horse, or for anybody with a horse with thick of coarse hair - look at the Heiniger Opal, or go for the full size clippers (Lister Star is a good full-size option if you are on a budget, although it is corded).
