Dog Fencing - Barrier Fencing and Electric Fencing

We all love ours dogs and want to keep them safe, while giving then time outside without having to watch them.  If you are not lucky enough to have the perfect secure permanent fence, or if you need to keep your dogs away from certain plants, driveways or other pets, then a barrier of some sort is important.  Puppies also tend to do better in smaller areas, so it is a good idea to section of a part of the garden while they develop confidence.

Standard barrier fences are a very simple inexpensive solution.  These fences start at £55 with all the poles and mesh.  They are very easy to install, move, and roll up when you don't need them.  They will contain most dogs (and cats, hens etc).

If you have a more challenging dog or if you want a more premanent solution or to fence a larger area, you might want to consider PAC Dog fences.  These fences are 'invisible' and require a little more set up.  A special wire is laid (usually just underground) around the parameter of the area you want fenced.  The dog then wears a special collar and when they approach the invisible barrier they get a sensation of your choosing to warn them not to cross the fence.  This can be an small electric buzz (it will not hurt them, but it is an unpleasant deterrent), or it can be a vibration, or even a sound.  Some people train their dog with a shock (usually only needed a couple of times) then rely on the vibration as a reminder for the dog to respect the boundary.  Depending on which system you pick, the collar may also be able to be used as a training collar for walks and you can operate the sensations with a remote control (this is helpful if you have a dog who is unreliable around sheep, other dogs, roads etc).  These fences are designed to keep your dog safe.

A Pac Dog Invisible Fence starts at around £205 (much cheaper than a wooden fence, and it can bend around difficult object with no problem)

A 20 m Boundary Fence is £55 and you can see more details and other lengths and styles of fence HERE

Or you can go for a more traditional electric fence, with plastic poles that push into the ground and wires that round around carrying a pulse.  The shock will not hurt the dog, but it does feel unpleasant and stops them from challenging the boundary.  Click HERE for more details

We have a Cavalier and use the Boundary Net for when we go on holiday in our caravan.  The PAC Dog fence is a great option for anyone with a large open space and a dog who wants freedom to safely run.
