Deer are beautiful creatures, but they can be pests too.  Electric fencing is a good way to keep crops safe, or to keep deer out of certain areas.  All you need is electric fencing tape, an energiser (and earth stake) and a power source (mains or battery).

Deer typically test new things with their nose.  Once they touch the fence with their nose they will get a nasty zap – it won’t hurt them, but it will teach them not to go close again.  However, for the truly intrepid deer, there are two ways to improve the effectiveness of an electrified fence. Combining the fence with attractants or lures increases the chance that the deer will touch the fence with their noses or mouths, enhancing the aversive conditioning. One tactic is to attach aluminum flags to an electrified wire, and to coat the flags with peanut butter. Another approach is to treat the entire length of tape with a peanut butter and oil mixture.
