if you're reading this, you've probably already twigged that there is a little device that can open and shut your chicken coop for you.  For such a simple product, it really does make a small difference to your morning and evening.  It means you don't have to worry about getting back in time to put the hens to bed - and it means the hens don't have to wait for you to let them out in the morning.  

There is a wide variety of chicken coop door openers in the market.  There are all sorts of bells and whistles, and some very cheap options too.  In our experience, the features that you really want are:

- a door that is programmable so it will open and shut at set times (in our opinion, the most reliable option but you need to adjust the timing to suit the time of year)

- a door that has a light sensor option (a good option for coops in bright sunlight - no need to adjust throughout the year)

- a door that lets you over-ride the set times, so you can very easily open and shut it whenever you like, just by pressing a button 

- a door that is easy to program from the outside

All the options above are robust and reliable and will make your life easier.  They can all come with or without an actual door.  We use the FC Premium Automatic Door Opener, but we just have it on our normal wooden coop door (because it is prettier).  However, if you have a wooden door that 'sticks' or doesn't slide up and down easily, you may wish to get the metal door to go with the opener.
