Solar electric fences are by far the easiest option for anyone new to electric fencing and without easy access to a mains supply. They are ideal for small to medium size fences, and are particularly good with horses, ponies and pets. In the UK, they work all year round, although may require a couple of boosts from the mains during the darkest winter months. All-in-one solar energisers have a rechargeable battery and energiser all inside one unit, with an integrated solar panel on top of the unit. The rechargeable battery will eventually run out (just like your mobile phone battery) and can be easily replaced when required (hopefully after at least a few years use). Currently, the best solar energisers are made by Gallagher and Hotline.
Gallagher solar energisers have a 7 year warranty if you register them online, which is quite remarkable. They are incredibly robust units and come in a range of power levels - the more powerful the energiser the more expensive it gets. The Gallagher S100 is the largest energiser and the S10 is the smallest.
Hotline energisers are made here in the UK and come with a 5 year warranty. There are currently 2 options, the FireDrake 34 and FireDrake 67. Another more powerful version is due to be released later this year and will become the most powerful solar energiser on the market (qualifying for grants for some farmers).

Gallagher is also introducing a small solar energiser, which is ideal for pets and gardens. This will be available later in the year and will cost about £100. Other solar energisers use the sun to directly power the energiser during daylight hours, and when there isn't sufficient sun D-cell batteries kick in. A great energiser of this nature is the Hotline Shrike Solar. It's ideal for strip grazing and for set-ups that are only needed during daylight hours. The D-cell batteries will run the fence for about 8 weeks, with no sun. Add the sunlight and your fence should be good to go for months! The Shrike is made here in the UK and has a 5 year warranty. For longer fences and electric nets that may have some earthing, it is better to go with a powerful 12 volt energiser, a leisure battery and a solar panel to charge the battery. The Gemini 120 is very popular, as is the Fenceman CP900. You can then clips a solar panel to your 12 volt battery. The solar panel will charge your battery for the majority of the year, and will reduce the amount you need to charge your battery during the darkest winter months. Solar energisers are very reliable and have come on loads in the last decade. They are here to stay and it won't be long before they are the go-to option for the vast majority of fences. Financially, they often work out to be similar to the cost of buying an energiser, leisure battery and solar panel separately. But the ease of use of having them all in one unit is fantastic. For paddocks and small fences, they are definitely a brilliant option if you have no access to the mains.
